Recertification

How do I maintain my SHRM Certification?

Recertification will be required every three years, before each cycle end date. Professionals will need to earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs), within their recertification cycle begin and end dates, in order to recertify. Recertification credits will be awarded for the PDC categories of Advance Your Education, Advance Your Profession and/or Advance Your Organization.

Download the SHRM Recertification Handbook to learn more.

When will my recertification cycle start and end?

Your initial recertification cycle begins the day you pass the exam and ends 3-years later on the last day of your birth month. After the completion of your initial cycle, your next cycle (and those following) will begin the day after your completed file is submitted and approved. The same end date as stated above applies.

EXAMPLE

Initial Cycle:
  • Candidate’s birth month is July
  • Candidate takes and passes the exam on May 1, 2019
  • New credential holder’s recertification cycle starts May 2, 2019 and ends July 31, 2022
Next Cycle:
  • Credential holder’s current recertification cycle is May 3, 2019 – July 31, 2022
  • Credential holder recertifies on April 28 2022
  • Credential holder’s NEW 3-year cycle is April 29, 2022 – July 31, 2025

When can I submit my recertification application?

You may submit your completed recertification application after one year into your recertification cycle. Once your recertification application is complete and has been approved, your new 3-year recertification cycle will begin the NEXT DAY. Your certification end date will remain the last day of your birth month. If you recertify with more than 60 credits, you are able to carry over up to 20 credits to your new cycle. Carryover credits will be auto-uploaded at the end of the month following your recertification and will appear in the Advance Your Education category.

What if I miss my recertification end date, will my certification expire and if so what options do I have to maintain my credential?

Completed recertification records are due three years from the date of certification (or recertification), on the last day of the credential holder's birth month. Every effort should be made to recertify within that time frame. However, should you fail to complete the recertification process by your end date, you will have 60 days to do so before your credential expires. The 60-day grace period may be used to accumulate additional PDCs. A $50 nonrefundable late fee will be applied, in addition to the standard fee, at the time of your submission. Failure to complete your recertification requirements by the end of the 60-day grace period will result in the revocation of your credential. If this should happen, your only option to regain your SHRM certification status is to retake the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam (whichever one applies).

I do not have an activity ID. How do I enter my professional development credits (PDCs)?

You may enter the event with or without an activity ID. If you do not have an activity ID, you just need to ensure that you can show how the event is related to the behavioral competencies and HR knowledge identified in the SHRM BoCK.

I logged in, but unable to add PDCs to my certification record, what do I need to do?

Are you using the same e-mail address for certification and shsygjmy.com? If you think you may have more than one e-mail address or account with SHRM, please contact us and we’ll help you consolidate your accounts.

I entered my PDCs and it is not accepting it. Why am I getting an error message?

Events cannot be entered until they have ended. If you have an ongoing event, such as a professional membership, you may not enter it until the membership cycle is complete. For example, if your SHRM membership dates are 6/1/2015 to 5/31/2016, you will not be able to enter it for credit until 6/1/2016. All other events such as classes, seminars, conferences, or webcasts cannot be entered until the event has taken place. If after checking the dates, you continue to receive an error, please contact us for further assistance.

Can I receive credit for participating in an HR survey? If so, how do I document them?

PDC credit is awarded for HR surveys that result in a Research report.

To document PDC's for participating in an HR survey, follow the steps below:

1. Login to the SHRM Certification Portal with your e-mail address and password.

2. Select "Add PDCs", then select "Advance Your Profession."

3. From the "Profession Sub-Category" field, select "Volunteering", then select "Continue".

4. From the "Type of Volunteering Activity" field, select "HR Survey Participation" as an option and provide the dates you started and completed the survey.

Can SHRM-sponsored events be auto-populated to my portal?

Yes! All SHRM conferences, seminars and eLearning programs that you attend, that can be matched to your SHRM membership account*, will auto-populate in your recertification portal, so you don't have to enter anything yourself. *If your SHRM certification e-mail address matches your member e-mail address, you're all set. If they are different - of if you're not sure - simply log in to shsygjmy.com/my/account to update your information.
